A GST for Malaysia in 2011
Find out where GST will apply, what will be exempt, and other considerations.
The Malaysian Government announced that it intended to implement a goods and services tax (GST).
While the commencement date is a matter for the government, it was proposed to be implemented by mid 2011.
In the last few months, the government has been rolling out an extensive awareness program, and has conducted about 2,000 awareness programs covering more than 100,000 participants, according to the Finance Ministry tax review panel chairman Datuk Kamariah Hussain.
If implemented, the GST is expected to replace the existing sales and services tax (SST) system and will operate similarly to that in other countries with a GST or value added tax (VAT) system.
